Sub-Terranean Laboratory
Located in Mjölkuddsberget, the Sub-T Lab offers a unique underground environment , featuring over 5 km of tunnels with diverse shapes, sizes, and surface textures. The tunnels provide varied environmental conditions, including high humidity, icy surfaces, dust, and occasional water drips—perfect for testing and validating research in fields ranging from underground mining to space exploration.
This environment enables the real-world testing of autonomous systems in GNSS-denied, communication-constrained, and harsh climatic conditions.
This is especially relevant for Sweden’s northern regions, where such conditions prevail for over half the year. The lab can support the development of autonomous systems for surveillance, inspection and ad-hoc communications in extreme environments.
Finally, the lab’s capabilities directly support Sweden’s defence readiness in the Arctic, a region of growing geopolitical importance. It enables the training, evaluation of concepts, and rapid deployment of robotic systems for military and civil protection.
To expand its collaborative research efforts, the RAI group invites external partners to leverage this exceptional facility. Contact us for more information on partnership opportunities.
